Japanese investors to pump $400m in energy sector

In Bangladesh, Japanese entrepreneurs will invest $400 million in Bangladesh to enhance the country’s energy producing capacity needed for industrial development.An agreement in this regard will be signed soon, following which Japanese investment will increase by over $400 million.


Chief Representative of Asia Pacific Region of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Fumiotaka Machida, informed this Tuesday at a meeting with Industries Minister Dilip Barua at the minister’s office.The visiting JBIC delegation headed by Machida called on Industries Minister Tuesday morning.


The meeting elaborately discussed JBIC investment issues that include modernisation of state-owned fertiliser factories, transferring Japanese hi-tech for industries to Bangladesh, investment in coal and gas based energy plants and telecommunication sector of the country.


Machida said JBIC is interested to invest for industrial development of the country. He particularly prioritised the energy sector for investment.He also showed interest to work in raising foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bangladesh, developing its SME sector, reforming banking and financial policy and micro economic policy.


He suggested enhancing foreign investment in energy sector for uninterrupted gas supply and infrastructural development of the country.Industries Minister Dilip Barua informed the delegation about the existing favourable investment situation in the country. He emphasised on transferring Japanese hi-tech industries to Bangladesh for a sustainable and skilled industrial development of the country.


Mentioning that the government did not withdraw subsidy in agriculture sector despite pressure from the development partners, he said the country has attained self-sufficiency in agriculture production through giving subsidy to the sector.


Terming Japan as a tested development partner of Bangladesh, Barua urged Japanese entrepreneurs for coming up to modernise the fertiliser factories in the country.Additional Secretary of Industries Ministry’s Monsur Ali Sikder, Singapore Representative of JBIC Shin Tanimura and senior officials of the ministry were also present in the meeting.
