US to increase military campaign against ISIL in Iraq and Syria
Oct.28, New York: The US is considering increasing its military campaign against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq and Syria, including the use of direct ground raids.
US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said on Tuesday that there would also be more air strikes against high-value targets. He said that US forces would not shy away from direct action on the ground if they see a chance to hit ISIL targets.
There are 3,500 US troops in Iraq. These troops have a train and advice role to help Iraqi forces battling the group but were recently drawn into fighting in northern Iraq.
Carter's comments, made to the Senate Armed Services Committee, come a week after US-Iraqi forces rescued dozens of hostages held by IS in Iraq.
