US submits sanction to UN on N Korea nuclear test
Feb 26, Washington: The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council aiming to increase pressure on North Korea in response to its latest nuclear test and rocket launch.
It comes in response to North Korea's recent nuclear test and missile launch.
The measures would for the first time require UN member states to inspect all cargo to or from North Korea, reports said.
Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the UN, said it would be the strongest set of sanctions imposed by the Security Council in more than 20 years.
He said the draft, which for the first time would subject cargo ships leaving and entering North Korea to mandatory inspections, goes farther than previous sanctions. It is meant to ensure North Korea will be held accountable for its actions, he added.
A vote is expected at the weekend.
North Korea's launch of a long-range rocket in February and a nuclear test in January were widely condemned as a flagrant violation of UN resolutions.
