UN urge for special court in Sri Lanka war crime
Sept.16, Geneva: The United Nations has called for a special court to try war crimes committed during Sri Lanka conflict. The report of the UN Human Rights Council accused the Sri Lankan army and Tamil rebel of atrocities, especially during the final stages of the war in 2009.
Sri Lanka did not back the UN's call for the court. UN estimate 40,000 Tamils died in the final army offense.
Sri Lankan government has unveiled to set up a truth and reconciliation commission to look into war crimes allegations, including those against the military. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had resisted international pressure to investigate on the issue.
