UN panel against torture concerns 'excessive use of force' by Israel

May 12, Geneva: A Uunited Nations panel against torture has expressed concerns about allegations of "excessive use of force," including deadly force, by Israeli security forces in Palestinian areas.

The Committee Against Torture, which works under the office of the U.N. human rights chief, on Friday released its "concluding observations" about Israel and five other countries including France, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Philippines, as part of regular reviews by the panel.

In a 12-page report about Israel, the committee said it was concerned about allegations of excessive use of force by Israeli security force at demonstrations, in response to attacks or alleged attacks against Israelis, and to restrict access in areas of Gaza, the Associated Press reported.

The panel engages in dialogue with national authorities, and does not have investigative or fact-finding powers of its own.
