Six hurt as car ploughs into crowd at Eid prayer gathering in Newcastle
June 25, Newcastle : Several people including children have been hurt after car rammed into a crowd celebrating Muslim religious holiday Eid al-Fitr outside Westgate Sports Centre in Britain's Newcastle.
Northumbria Police have arrested a 42-year-old woman but do not believe the incident is terror-related. Police said that don't consider the incident to be terror-related. Vehicle collided with pedestrians on a pavement at around 9.14am. Emergencies services are currently at the scene and five casualties have been confirmed.
The Westgate Sports Centre hosted an event dedicated to Eid celebrations. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. A witness told “This was the Eid celebrations, the end of Ramadan. It was the end of prayers we were greeting each other a woman was driving and the car just drove into the people. The car was going on, people tried to stop the car”.
