Scores killed in southern Nigeria gas explosion
Dec 25, Abuja: More than 100 people are reported killed in an explosion at an industrial gas plant in south-eastern Nigeria. Those killed people linking up to refill their cooking gas cylinders.
A truck is said to have exploded as it was off-loading butane cooking gas in the town of Nnewi in Anambra State on Thursday, news reports said. Residents were rushing to refill their gas cylinders in the time for Christmas.
Local police have confirmed the incident but have yet to provide further details. A huge fire reportedly followed the blast.
A reporter for Associated Press counted the remains of 100 bodies.
By the time firefighters managed to put out the blaze, an Associated Press reporter counted the remains of more than 100 corpses.
The dead and injured were taken to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi which has a predominantly Christian community.
