Portugal blaze kills 43 and injures 59
June 18,Libson: The toll in the Potugal fire has risen and is expected to rise further, according to the Interior Ministry.
A ministry official official Jorge Gomes told the press that the death toll has risen to 43 and "59 people have been injured”. As major forest fire sweeping through central Portugal that has yet to be controlled.
The blaze on Saturday hit the mountainous area of Pedrogao Grande, 200 km southeast of Lisbon, amid an intense heat wave and strong winds that fanned the fire later in the day. Many people are burnt alive in their cars when they tried to flee the area
About 1,700 firefighters and 160 vehicles were dispatched late on Saturday .Six firefighters have been injured. Spain dispatched two water-bombing planes on Sunday morning to aid the Portuguese fire service on the ground.
PM Costa has called it "Unfortunately this seems to be the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires,".
The source of the fire, which broke out at around 2pm local time on Saturday, is so far unknown, but will be determined “in due course,” PM Costa added.
Dozens of people who fled their homes were taken in by residents of the nearby municipality of Ansiao.
