North Korea urges UN to condemn US-South Korea drill
Mar 24, Pyongyang:North Korea has urged the United Nations to condemn the joint US-South Korean drills, as they allegedly create a “tense situation” on the Korean peninsula and “threaten peace and international security,” according to a letter sent by North Korean UN envoy Ja Song-nam to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, RIA Novosti reports.
The letter cited Article 99 of the UN Charter, which gives the UN chief the right to bring attention of the UN Security Council to any issue which he believes can undermine peace and security.
The US-South Korean two-month military exercises, dubbed Foal Eagle, began on March 1 and have already drawn the ire of the North, which fired four missiles into the sea off Japan on March 6 in response.
