    Nigeria: Global peace foundation sensitizes citizens on peaceful co-existence students at a workshop organized by Global

    Aug 18,Abuja:Ikara community in Kaduna State Northwest Nigeria had in the past witnessed four major crisis ranging from identity, religion and political based conflict (i.e the crisis between hunters in the 1960s, the 1991 Zangon Kataf reprisal attack, the chanting of abusive words by a particular section of the two major faiths when they went on a solidarity visit to someone who converted to a particular religion and the 2011 post election crisis) in the state.

    While on the other hand, Makarfi community had recorded two major religion and political violence in the past when a particular Muslim sect attempted to take over a particular mosque in the area and the 2011 post election crisis.

    Therefore, in an attempt to forestall future breakdown of law and order in Makarfi and Ikara Communities, the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, championing the cause of ‘One Family Under God’ Campaign has sensitised over fifty persons in each of the two communities on Tuesday 16th August 2016, on the importance of peaceful coexistence.

    Speaking at the sensitization programme in Makarfi, Global Peace Foundation, Northern Co-coordinator, Reverend John Joseph Hayab explained that, the ‘One Family Under God’ Campaign was created out of the desire that, all human being irrespective of religion and race are descendants of Adam and Eve which makes us members of one family in the eyes of God.

    “The choice of these communities was not because there is crisis currently, but to further cements the existing peace and enlightens the people on the importance of recognising each other’s differences." A statement from the Media and Communications Officer of Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, Richard Pius Garba said, Rev. Hayab stressed that God in His wisdom has a purpose of making us belong to different religious belief and groups so that we may live together and respect each other’s differences.

    Sheikh Halliru Abdullahi Maraya, who is also the Northern Co-coordinator Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, pointed out that Selfishness, ignorance and illiteracy are the major causes of violence in any society; hence, “One Family Under God” Campaign to further enlighten the people on the dangers of religious crisis, tension and to also encourage brotherly love and dialogue in resolving issues.

    Earlier, Member representing Makarfi / Kudan Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Usman appealed to Nigerians to embrace dialogue in resolving their differences rather than discord for improved socio economic growth.

    On behalf of the participants, in Ikara and Makarfi LGAs, the CAN chairman Ikara local government-Yahaya Galadima, the JNI PRO in Ikara- Lawal Tahir, Mrs. Elizabeth in Makarfi and the Chief Imam of Makarfi all applauded the foresight of GPFN, noting that the campaign was apt considering the way most people hysterically relate with their neighbours from different faiths and also pledged to spread the message of peace and oneness to their immediate communities.
