Myanmar to announce presidential nominations
March 10, Kyodo: Myanmar's parliament under the control of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) has named two candidates for the country’s next president.
One of them, Htin Kyaw, is almost certain to be elected president by the NLD-controlled parliament.
The nominations confirm that NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi will not be president of the country.
Three parliamentary groups from the Lower House, the Upper House, and military-nominated non-elected representatives of both houses will each nominate a candidate.
On Thursday morning, Suu Kyi's office released a statement calling for citizens to support her party so it can make good on its promises
However, Ms Suu Kyi has previously said she would be "above" the president.
