Kaduna State University lecturer Dr. John Danfulani released on bail

Feb 2, Kadun: Kaduna State University Lecturer Dr. John Danfulani who was remanded in police custody on Friday over an alleged hate speech on facebook has regained freedom.
He was granted bail today by Chief magistrate Court 1, sitting in Kaduna on the sum of 5, million naira (Nigerian currency) equivalent to about 25,000 US dollars.
Dr Danfulani was dragged before the Magistrate Court for allegedly posting hate speech on his Facebook Wall and was suspended by the University management where he works.
Oslo Times on Sunday night published a statement from his group Human Rights Development and Fundamental Rights Advocacy Nigeria signed by their spokesperson, George Brown demanding for immediate release of their member and Director of Strategy.
They described his arrest as a breach of his fundamental human rights and freedom of speech.
It was later gathered that Dr Danfulani was earlier denied bail on Friday when he was first dragged to court by the Police as the presiding magistrate Auwal Musa who sat on the matter at around 7pm ordered that he be remanded in police custody till today Monday when the case came up for hearing.
Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to 7th March, 2016 for further mention.
In his ruling, magistrate Musa, said" the alleged two count offences leveled against the accused were bailable but carries three years prison term upon conviction.
He however granted the accused bail of the sum of five million naira with two sureties who must be civil servants not below the rank of Directors who have 2.5 million naira each equivalent to (12,500 US dollars) .
The Magistrate said, sureties must submit two passport photographs, government identification card, certificate of occupancy, bank statement of account, genuine and verifiable address of residence.
