Former Bangladesh PM Kahelda Zia jailed for five years for corruption
Feb 8, Dhaka: Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption, which could prevent her from running in the upcoming elections.Apart from her,her son eldest son Tarique Rahman and fourth others also face sentneces for the crime.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Court-5 on Thursday sentenced the former prime minister to five years rigorous imprisonment.
"The verdict proves no one is above the law," Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque said after the verdict was announced amid tight security. He further added, “It depends on the decision of Supreme Court whether Khaleda can contest for the next election or not.
“As per constitution, a person cannot contest the national polls if he or she is sentenced to jail for two years or more.”
Meanwhile, Khaleda’s lawyer Sanaullah Mia told the reporters: “BNP chairperson has been kept at a special cell in Nazimuddin road’s jail.“Since it will take time to get a certified copy of the verdict, we have requested the court for a photocopy so that we can appeal to the upper court on Sunday.”
The court has ordered to give BNP chairperson facilities in prison as enjoyed by a former prime minister. We will now send her personal belongings to the prison.
Claiming that Khaleda did not get justice, the lawyer says: “BNP chief has asked the countrymen to stay patient. And they would take the case to higher courts of justice.
