UN reaches ceasefire agreement in Syria
Feb 22, NY: A UN taskforce in charge of discussing a peace deal in Syria has reached an agreement to cease hostilities between the Syrian government and opposition groups, media reports said.
High-level sources from a number of countries had confirmed that an agreement between the co-chairs of the taskforce, Russia and the US, had been reached, Al Jazeera reported.
The development could pave the way for further talks and possibly a ceasefire between the rebels and the government of Syria, President Bashar al-Assad, it said.
The agreement excluded the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group and the al-Nusra Front, which are listed as terrorist groups by the UN Security Council.
