Deadly explosion hits Veracruz oil plant in Mexico
April 21, Mexico City: A massive explosion at an oil facility in the southeastern Mexican on Wednesday has killed at least three people and injured 136 more.
According to the officials and state-run energy giant Pemex said that a huge plume of toxic gray smoke could be seen spewing from the plant
known as Pajaritos in the city of Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz state. The blast, which was felt from as far as 10km away, forced the evacuation of nearby schools and businesses.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated and schools closed. Footage showed a large fire and vast plumes of smoke.
Veracruz state governor Javier Duarte told Milenio Television that the blast killed three people at the plant. Another 58 people were hurt, according to Pemex.
The cause of the blast is unclear. Several explosions have been reported at Pemex facilities in recent years.
