Burkina Faso coup leader vows to hand over power
Sept 22, OSLO: Burkina Faso coup leader General Gilbert Diendere has vowed to hand over the power to a civilian transitional government late on Monday.
Issuing a press statement, Diendere apologised to the nation and said he would release the interim prime minister who has been under house arrest since the coup. The statement from Diendere came after the military threatened on Monday to forcibly disarm presidential guard members responsible for last week's coup.
The coup comes lest than a month before Burkina Faso go for October 11 polls. The coup was carried out by allies of President Blaise Compaore who last year was ousted by street protests. The protests ended a 27-year old regime of Compaore who was seeking to extend his rule but ended up prompting mass protests.
