Bangladesh: Two sentenced to death for killing blogger
Dec 31, Dhaka: Two people have been sentenced to death and six others to prison in Bangladesh for the killing of an atheist blogger in 2013.
A court in Bangladesh Thursday sentenced them for killing Ahmed Rajib Haider, who was hacked to death as he was returning home from a rally in the capital, Dhaka.
Seven university students and the leader of a banned Islamist group were charged with murder in the death of Haider, a blogger who campaigned for banning the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, which opposed Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971.
A five-year sentence was given to the head of Ansarullah Bangla, the group suspected of carrying out the attack.
Five more secular bloggers and writers were killed in Bangladesh in 2015, media reports said.
There have been several clashes in recent years between Islamists and supporters of the secular Awami League.
