Alexis Tsipras party wins election: No majority
Sept.21, Athens: Greece's former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras party Syriza party has a clear mandate to form a new government despite lacking majority. His party has won the fifth elections in a six years.
Syriza had won more than 35 percent of the vote and will have to form a coalition with the nationalist Independent Greeks. Conservative New Democracy won 28 percent.Turnout in Sunday's poll was just over 55 percent, down from 63 percent in January and low by Greek standards.
Mr Tsipras told supporters in Athens, "I feel vindicated because the Greek people have a clear mandate to carry on fighting inside and outside our country to uphold the pride of our people."
