Nigeria : Malnutrition kills 120 children in Kaduna

Oct 25, Kaduna : Kaduna Emergency Nutrition Action Plan (KADENAP) has said 120 children have died from malnutrition in the state Northwest part of the country in the last one year. Chairperson of KADENAP and wife of Kaduna state governor Aisha Ummi El-rufai disclosed the disturbing figure while fielding questions from newsmen in the state capital. Available statistics indicated that a total of 11,540 children were admitted in the three pilot LGA's from January to August, 2017,saying,' out of which 7,117 were exited, 5,968 recovered, while, according to her, 120 children were reported to have died within the year under review. KADENAP was inaugurated in January 2017 by the state governor,Malam Nasiru El-rufai following disturbing reports about malnourished children in part of the state. The state governor approved the sum of N300m for the purchase of the Ready-to-Used -Therapeutic -Food (RUTF) to be used in the treatment of the malnourished children across the state. She explained further "UNICEF impressed with the show of commitment to this cause added a sum of N450m to make it N750m for the purchase of the Russian,". KADENAP set up three Community Management Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) sites in three local government areas of Igabi, Zaria and Makarfi as first phase to treat malnurish children. Poverty, illetracy, lack of proper breastfeeding, lack of antenal care for pregnant women , poor diet among others we attributed as factors responsible for malnutrition in the country.
